No fixed age limit, but vehicles over five years old attract higher ZRA duty, so a newer model can cost less in total.

Is there an age limit for importing a car to Zambia?
No official age limit, but vehicles over five years old attract higher ZRA duty, which usually makes a newer model cheaper once the taxes are added.
What is EAA inspection?
EAA certification is required for Japanese used cars entering Zambia. Without a valid certificate you risk penalties at clearance, so it is done before the car ships.
What taxes will I pay?
Customs duty on the ZRA table by engine size and age, excise included in that table, 16% VAT on the combined value, a carbon emission surtax by engine capacity, and a surcharge on older vehicles.
What is ASYCUDA preclearance?
Since May 2024 vehicles must be precleared in the ASYCUDA World system at least five days before arrival. Missing it incurs a penalty.
What documents do I need for customs?
Bill of lading, commercial invoice, EAA inspection certificate, export certificate, customs declaration (CE 20), national ID and the Interpol vehicle clearance certificate.
Do I need a clearing agent?
Not mandatory, but recommended. We can recommend agents we have worked with.
