Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI)

All used vehicles exported from Japan to Jamaica must undergo a Pre-Shipment Inspection by Auto Terminal Japan Limited (ATJ). The certificate is required for the import permit.

Import Permit Process

Apply online at www.jswift.gov.jm and submit:

  • Invoice or Bill of Sale
  • Export Certificate
  • Valid ID
  • Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN)
  • PSI Certificate

  • Import Entry (C87) and eSad (prepared by a licensed customs broker)

Duties and Taxes

Tax Type Rate
Import Duty 20% of CIF
General Consumption Tax (GCT) 6% of CIF
Environmental Levy 0.5% of CIF

Example Calculation:

If the CIF value is USD 10,000:

  • Import Duty: 10,000 × 20% = USD 2,000
  • GCT: 10,000 × 6% = USD 600
  • Environmental Levy: 10,000 × 0.5% = USD 50

Total Taxes: USD 2,650

Shipping

Shipping from Japan to Jamaica takes approximately 24–34 days by RORO. Container shipping is also available. Costs depend on vehicle size and freight rates.

Important Notes

  • Vehicles for individuals or companies (non-dealers) cannot be sold within 3 years of import.
  • Returning residents may import vehicles up to 10 years old with pre-approval.
  • All vehicles must meet Jamaican emissions standards.
  • Use a licensed customs broker for smooth clearance.
